World’s First “Virus Passport”

The COVID-19 continues to bring significant changes which will surely have an impact on the social norms and routines in the ever-changing world. Although, the US and UK are also among the countries which have been planning to introduce permits that will include the user’s vaccination status but China has taken the lead in the world’s plans for “virus passports”. China has, recently, launched a health certificate program for domestic travelers which is being considered as the world’s first “virus passport”. The digital certificate, which shows a user’s vaccination status and virus test results, is available for Chinese citizens via a programme on Chinese social media platform WeChat.  During a recent regular press conference, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, “To help promote world economic recovery and facilitate cross-border travel, the Chinese side has decided to roll out the Chinese version of health certificate for outbound Chinese travellers. The certificate will be available in two formats, digital and in paper, with the certificate holder’s NAT and Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody test results and vaccination status on record. All the information will be encrypted in a QR code that can be verified, decrypt-ed and read by a public key provided by the Chinese side”. It is also important to note that the European Union (EU) is also working on a vaccine “green pass” that would allow citizens to travel between member countries and abroad. The pandemic, COVID-19, which has badly affected the social sectors and also has wreaked havoc on the global economy is now creating unprecedented changes in the daily life which will permanently change everything in the world. Well, whatever the changes the world would witness in pursuit of protecting the humans from this pandemic, it will result in the formation of a “New World”.
