LONDON: Harriet Dart, Dan Evans, Ashleigh Barty, Sloane Stephens and Petra Kvitova have cruised into the third round at Wimbledon on Thursday. Dart, 22, battled to a 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-1 win over Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia to set up an encounter with world number one Ashleigh Barty. Evans, meanwhile, impressed in a dominant display to oust 18th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3 6-2 7-6 (7-2).
World number one Ashleigh Barty cruised into the third round at Wimbledon on Thursday with a 6-1 6-3 win over Belgium’s Alison van Uytvanck. The 23-year-old Australian, who won the French Open last month, was on court for just 55 minutes. Barty will next face British number three Harriet Dart, who beat Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-1.
Meanwhile, sixth seed Petra Kvitova recovered from a scare in the first set to beat Kristina Mladenovic 7-5 6-2. After breaking in the opening game of the match, France’s Mladenovic served for the opening set at 5-3 only for Kvitova to break back and win the following three games. The 26-year-old Czech again dropped serve at the start of the second but fought back immediately to progress in one hour 26 minutes.
American ninth seed Sloane Stephens also eased through with a 6-0 6-2 victory against China’s Wang Yafan. Top seed Barty served for the match at 5-2 but Van Uytvanck broke back, only for Barty to break again in the following game, winning her match point with a smart volleyed winner. I started particularly well and not too many errors, a bit of a blemish trying to serve out the match, but very happy with today, she said.
