US Indo-Pacific strategy: An overview and competition with China


“Indo-Pacific “, originally the concept of a world encompassing the two regions of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, is not a new concept. Gurpreet Khurana the strategist and also the Executive Director of national marine foundation of Delhi. He used this word for the very initial Ind-Pacific policy ten years ago. Recently, in the Washington Post, he wrote since 1980 “China’s Rise” the map has been changed by the new name to a new concept. “Asia Pacific” which unites the United States and East Asia has been shaped a depiction of a civil society. The “Indo-Pacific” term cast-off by Mr. Trump meant that India, U.S.A and other important states, have participated to prevent from China in its development agenda of cold war influence.

In recent years, the Indo-Pacific strategy and the Quad concept have been introduced and promoted by various countries at different times in time.  Shinzo Abe held talks with Indian Prime Minister Modi and repeatedly encouraged the “Indo-Pacific Strategy”. The India’s “Eastward Action” policy was also admired by him. The China’s researchers supposed that political changes brought about by China’s rise are the key motive why Washington is making efforts to strengthen the Indo-pacific association, and this policy is mainly formed to curb China’s influence and its strategic policies in this region. Further, some researchers believed that Trump’s Indo-pacific policy is basically a modification of Obama’s policy to gain balance again in this region. Some Chinese researchers have faith in the requirement of new policy because of the “Balance of Power” approach of the U.S.A. In opposition to the fading the U. S’s top place and its increasing rise of Indo-pacific economic significance, and aim is to restore unity and cooperation in response to China’s rise.

If we discussed about the major members of the Indo-pacific policy, the USA is known as the leader of this policy. Currently, U.S.A has prioritized the Indo-pacific agenda that imitates the focus of U.S.A over Indian ocean area. And India is becoming a leader among emerging economies due to its economic growth over the past few years. If we talk about post reversal of plan of Obama to regain balance in Asia-pacific, the Asia-pacific power plant included a corresponding adjustment with the Trump’s policies. At this point, the motive for trump’s revival strategy. In opposition to the weakening of the United States’ top position and the growing rise of the Indo-Pacific economic and economic gravity, the aim is to restore unity and cooperation in response to China’s rise.

If we discussed about the major members of the Indo-Pacific strategy, the United States is known as  the leader of the “Indo-Pacific Strategy”. Currently, the United States has prioritized the “Indo-Pacific Plan” which reflects the United States’ focus on the Indian Ocean region. Aside from its insecurity as island state, the motive why Japan is clear with India and U.S is Japan’s attentiveness and in line with China’s growing strategic and economic capacities. On other hand, India is among the significant proponents of Indo-pacific policy, who is a state with greater ambitions and desires regarding this strategy. Therefore, India will definitely take the chance to encourage modification and balance of his interests in the region, expansion of his presence in Middle-East, military and economic cooperation with U.S and its allies, and completely expanding its influence in the region and international forum.

Further, moving towards Japan, which is a key United States partner in the Asia-Pacific region, plays a key role in establishing and promoting Indo-Pacific strategy. Aside from its insecurity as an island nation, the reason why Japan is so clear with India and the United States is, Japan’s vigilance and in line with China’s growing economic and military capabilities. Moreover, Australia is among those states who generate the concept of Indo-pacific very firstly. Now the state is openly holding the Indo-pacific policy indorsed by the United States and accentuates its position in this strategy, which is not because of Australian desire for the betterment of his relations with the U.S but also due to his desire of extra regional influence in southeast Asia as well.

In the 1960s, Australia discussed the intensification of its influence in the “India” region to avoid its difficulties in the Cold War. The rest are “the Asian States” which are South Asian, south east Asian countries and Middle Eastern as well. There is need to pay attention on them as well. Linking the Indian ocean with pacific-ocean they are milestone. The “Indo-Pacific Strategy” has been supported by Singapore and Indonesia as well in South East Asia. Between U.S and China’s power politics some under developed and small countries being held and entangled. They are feared from Chinese rise but at the same time of economic gain from the China they don’t want to lost the chance economic developments. Furthermore, India and China are important competitors and economic rivals in the region.  Today, Indo-Pacific nations face unprecedented challenges to their sovereignty, prosperity and peace. The United States and our partners believe that the best way to prevent conflict is to reinforce the values that supported the Indo-Pacific region’s remarkable progress.
