Pakistan and Sri Lanka are two important countries of the South Asian region that enjoy very cordial and friendly relations. They have also extended cooperation to each other in different sectors, and are keen on further strengthening their relation through frequent exchange of delegations at varying levels. Newly elected president of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa was on Monday sworn in a day after he was declared the winner in the closely fought election in the South Asian island nation. The government and leadership of Pakistan have warmly felicitated Gotabaya Rajapaksa on his electoral victory as seventh President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. President of Pakistan in his congratulatory remarks expressed the hope to continue working with Sri Lanka for the betterment of people of the two countries and to advance shared interests of regional peace, stability and prosperity. The Sri Lankan President reciprocated warm wishes expressed by President and the people of Pakistan. He expressed his resolve to building closer ties between the two nations. The Prime Minister also extended heartfelt congratulations to Gotabaya Rajapaksa on victory in Sri Lankan presidential elections. Pakistan looks forward to working closely with Sri Lanka for further deepening brotherly ties and strengthening cooperation for peace, progress and prosperity of peoples and the region. Pakistan was confident that under Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s stewardship, Sri Lanka would continue its journey towards greater prosperity and peace. Pakistan appreciated the conduct of a free, fair and peaceful election by the Election Commission and the Government of Sri Lanka. Such exchanges of views at high level between two friendly countries certainly go a long way in promoting the existing cooperation, boosting trade relations, and further strengthening the existing ties besides sharing views on matters of bilateral interest and regional issues. Learning from the experiences of Sri Lanka in important sectors of health and education will surely help Pakistan in accelerating the process of further improvement in the two fields.
