Pakistan’s efforts to fight against terrorism are very much evident. The sacrifices made by Pakistan are immense and unparalleled. Besides cost in blood of over 75,000 Pakistanis, there has been loss of more than $123 billion to the national exchequer since 2003. The Global Terrorism Index, which profiles data on terrorism from across the world ranked Pakistan second among the countries most affected by terrorism. In 2013, 5, 379 Pakistanis were martyred in terrorist attacks followed by 5,496 in 2014, 3,682 in 2015, 1,830 in 2016 and 924 in 2017.
Pakistan’s National Action Plan has been devised to counter terrorism. Pakistan has also worked to avert the terror financing. Pakistan has eliminated sanctuaries of all terrorists groups including the Haqqani Network from its soil through a well thought out military campaign. Pakistan’s commitment towards defeating the threat of terrorism cannot be questioned, with the country having made enormous sacrifices to rid itself of the scourge of extremist groups. Terrorism is one of the biggest challenges confronting the world today.
The success Pakistan has achieved in its campaign against terrorism and extremism in recent years is testimony to the same service, dedication and sacrifice that Pakistan’s security forces have always been known for. The few miscreants have tried to impose their agenda but they met a failure. Recently, The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) was listed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) by the US State Department, which also imposed economic sanctions on the group and anyone affiliated with it.
BLA is an armed separatist group that targets security forces and civilians, mainly in ethnic Baloch areas of Pakistan, the State Department said in a statement, citing a number of attacks, including against Chinese engineers in August 2018 and the Chinese consulate in Karachi in November 2018. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly said that, BLA remains a proscribed entity in Pakistan since 2006 and in recent times has carried out several terrorist attacks in the country.
Balochistan is a key route of China’s multibillion dollar project called the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The project aims to connect China’s Xinjiang province to Balochistan’s Gwadar port through roads, railways, transport cargo and several other development projects. Military operations such as Zarb-e-Azb and Raddul Fasaad have considerably brought down the terrorist attacks and the ability of the terrorists to attack Pakistanis.
In the same context last year, it was another sad day for Pakistan in the history of its war against terrorism when the country faced two deadly terror incidents. In the morning of that day, heavily armed terrorists launched blatant gun and grenade attacks on the Chinese consulate in Karachi city that claimed the lives of two police officials and two visa applicants. The brave Pakistani police officer Suhai Aziz Talpur successfully led police operations against the terrorists.
Due to this timely response by the police and paramilitary forces, they foiled the terrorist attack, killed three militants and managed to avoid more casualties and devastation. On that same day Pakistan faced another deadly terrorist attack, where at least 34 innocent people were killed and 36 others wounded in the Orakzai tribal district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The terrorist attack against the Chinese consulate received widespread condemnation from top civil and military leadership and civil society in Pakistan.
The prime objective of the terrorists was to sabotage the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and to harm Pakistan-China relations. Some elements are constantly involved in hatching conspiracies against CPEC and the friendship of both countries. The enemy should know that the Pakistan China friendship is strong and deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of both countries, who sent a strong message to the terrorists that their efforts of damaging the Pakistan China friendship will never succeed. Pakistan has made significant achievements in its ongoing war against terrorism. Pakistan launched decisive and indiscriminate military action against terrorists and dismantled all their hideouts and networks which were located near the Pakistan Afghan border. The efforts are still on their way to avert any such situation within the country.
