ISLAMABAD, Ambassador of Iraq Hamid Abbas Lafta called on Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad here on Thursday.

Pakistan-Iraq bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest came under discussion during the meeting, said a statement.

Provision of facilities for tourists especially ‘Ziareen’ were also discussed in the meeting.

They stressed the need for enhanced liaison between the interior ministries of both countries for visa facilitation and security cooperation.

The ambassador said there was a need for hours to further promote and strengthen the Pak-Iraq relations which were based on historic, brotherhood, and mutual trust, he added.

Sheikh Rasheed said Pakistan condemned terrorist acts around the world, including in Iraq. Pakistan itself remained a victim of terrorism and sacrificed the lives of 80,000 people including personnel of law and enforcing agencies in the war against terrorism, he added.

He said Pakistan would enhance travel facilities to the intending ‘Ziareen’ to Iraq.

It is noted that Pakistan and Iraq have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for facilitating cooperation and collaboration in the field of tourism between the two countries.

The MoU was signed by Iraq’s Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities and the Ambassador of Pakistan to Iraq, according to a press release on Friday.

The MoU will also help reinforce people-to-people linkages between Pakistan and Iraq.

Pakistan is also engaging actively with the Iraqi side for the facilitation of Pakistani Zaireen to Iraq.

The signing of the MoU is another manifestation of the efforts of both countries to strengthen and diversify bilateral collaboration across diverse fields.

The bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Iraq received a significant boost with a number of ministerial-level visits exchanged last year including the visit of Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi which was reciprocated by Iraq FM Fuad Hussein. Pakistan remains committed to deepening and broadening its fraternal ties with the Republic of Iraq.
