LONDON: Prime Minister Imran Khan’s former wife Jemima Goldsmith recently took to social media to express her views on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s departure as ‘senior’ members of the British Royal family.
Since the news broke last week, there have been plenty of reports about what this means for the Royal family, especially what Markle may do with her newfound freedom.
Jemima, who was married to the Prime Minister for nine years and has two sons with him, wrote that “she understands how Meghan feels,” trying to adapt to a different life.
“I don’t necessarily agree with the way Meghan and Harry have handled things but I know what Princess Diana went through,” she wrote in a tweet. “I know what it’s like to marry a national hero from another country and be attacked on social media for your ethnicity -too Jewish in my case.” Jemima is said to have enjoyed a close friendship with the late Princess Diana, who first came to Pakistan in 1996 and met the Khan family. Although Imran an and Jemima split in 2004, citing that it was becoming “difficult for her to adapt to the political life of Imran Khan in Pakistan,” she remains supportive friend to her former husband. After PM Khan became leader of the country, she also took to Twitter to congratulate him. She wrote, “22 years later, after humiliations, hurdles and sacrifices, my sons’ father is Pakistan’s next PM. It’s an incredible lesson in tenacity, belief and refusal to accept defeat.” Jemima continues to enjoy a huge fan base in Pakistan while living in her home city of London, England.
