GLOBAL WARMING IS GLOBAL WARNING

92

Global Warming is caused by the increase of carbon dioxide levels in the earth’s atmosphere and a result of human activities that have been causing harm to our environment for the past few centuries now. Global Warming is something that can’t be ignored and steps have to be taken to tackle the situation globally. The average temperature is constantly rising by 1.5 degrees Celsius for the last few years. The best method to prevent future damage to the earth, cutting down of more forests should be banned and Afforestation should be encouraged. Start by planting trees near your homes and offices, participate in events, teach the importance of planting trees. It is impossible to undo the damage but it is possible to stop further harm. For this purpose, UN and all its member states celebrate world environment day and create awareness among masses to protect the earth and take action against global warming

Now, World Environment Day takes place every year on 5th June. It is the United Nations’ flagship day for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

Last year, Pakistan announced to host world environment day in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). At that time World Environment Day theme was ‘ecosystem restoration’ and focus on resetting our relation with nature. It also marked the formal launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021 – 2030. As host of World Environment Day, Pakistan highlighted environmental issues and showcase the country’s own initiatives and its role in global efforts.

Though, Pakistan has been persistently among the top 10 countries facing adverse impacts of climate change in terms of recurring natural calamities and increased vulnerability due to climate change. The Government of Pakistan has achieved promising milestones with regards to nature conservation, climate action and community development along with gender inclusive strategies within its available limited resources providing equal opportunities to women of the most vulnerable areas facing environmental degradation. Led by the former government the plan was to expand and restore the country’s forests through a 10 billion Tree Tsunami spread over 5 years. The campaign includes restoring mangroves and forests, as well as planting trees in urban settings, including schools, colleges, public parks and green belts. Pakistan launched an Ecosystem Restoration Fund to support nature-based solutions to climate change and facilitate the transition towards environmentally resilient, ecologically targeted initiatives covering afforestation and biodiversity conservation

This year, theme of the World Environment Day 2022 was “Only One Earth” which was observed by millions of people with a focus on living sustainability in harmony with nature. The President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi urged international community that adverse impacts of climate change needed to be reversed by adopting sustainable consumption practices, protecting natural water resources, ensuring fertile soil and taking collective transformative action on a global scale by developing partnerships with all concerned authorities to save our planet Earth. Whereas, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called on global powers for a united action to address multifaceted challenge of climate change on World Environment Day.

The environment is the most precious gift to humans on this planet. Today we need to focus on the importance of the environment and to remind ourselves that nature shouldn’t be taken for granted. World Environment Day is observed worldwide to respect and be grateful for everything that the environment has given to humans and to take a pledge to protect it. The idea behind the World Environment Day is to create a beautiful world which is free of pollution and scarcity of natural resources. Banning plastic, planting more trees and plants, saving water, recycling, saving wildlife and animals are some of the steps which lead to a better environment. One should always be conscious of their activities and strive to keep surroundings clean and healthy. We should protect natural resources and use them efficiently and carefully. Standing together we can create a beautiful and healthy environment.

It is necessary to address environmental issues like deforestation, increasing global warming, wastage and losses of food, pollution etc. Throughout the world, several campaigns are organised with a particular theme and slogan to bring effectiveness around the world. Celebration of World Environment Day is essential to keep the people aware of the cause of environmental protection and commit for the same. It is a platform for the world to come together on a significant issue of environmental protection and make necessary plans.
