Gunther’s relationship with (and crush on) Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) was a hit with Friends fans throughout the show’s 10-year run. However, James Michael Tyler – who played the Central Perk boss – revealed he hasn’t spoken to Jennifer Aniston since the sitcom came to an end, back in 2004.
And, just like that, our hearts have broken. In fact, the 57-year-old explained he hasn’t even seen the waitress turned fashion maven since the show’s wrap party. ‘I haven’t seen Jennifer since the wrap party, honestly. It’s been 15 years since it ended,’ he said.
‘That was a time of our lives when we were lucky enough to be able to work together for 10 years and have that sort of chemistry. Gunther was madly in love with Rachel Green (Picture: Getty) ‘She lives in another city. I’m not going to go and hang outside her house and wait for her to come outside and say hello. That would be kind of weird!’ Gunther would most definitely approve, though. But James insisted he’s not taking the snub personally, telling the Daily Star Sunday: ‘It’s nothing personal. Actors move on. It’s been a long time.
I’m married and other people are married. Things change.’ Which is fair enough. James was originally cast as an extra on the show, before Gunther became a surprise hit with fans thanks to his quiet pining over Rachel – despite the fact he barely spoke. James revealed there was a plot to have Gunther and Rachel live together (Picture: NBC) And, speaking to Metro.co.uk, he let slip there was once a storyline where his dreams were set to come true, with Rach moving in with him. Yes, seriously.
‘It never went through but they were going to have Rachel move in with Gunther,’ he told us. ‘I remember reading the first draft of that script and thinking, “Oh man, they’re never going to make this work.”
