While attention has been on the disastrous monsoon floods, the Covid-19 positive rate is fast increasing throughout the nation. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that Islamabad, where the rate is over 7 percent, has the highest positive ratio at about 39 percent, followed by Karachi. Additionally, cities like Lahore, Peshawar, and Hyderabad have recorded infection rates of more than 2%. High positivity ratios may not always mean there will be another epidemic, but a global recovery increases the possibility of a sixth wave. Many countries including Pakistan rolled back on SOPs after cases declined. Now with a reduction in surveillance including testing and sequencing, it is particularly challenging to determine the impact of the sub-variants that are driving up hospitalizations and death rates. Thus, the WHO urged countries to continue implementing necessary measures to reduce transmission and improve immunity amongst the people. New and more potent varieties with varying levels of virulence, transmissibility, and immunological escape potential may appear if nations fail to control transmission. Local health officials worry that the number of cases may spike during Eid-ul-Azha and the approaching month of Muharram. Everyone should be extremely cautious at this time and must self-isolate if they have any symptoms because the nationwide monsoon rains make it difficult for people to get tested and immunized. The NCOC previously encouraged all regions and provinces to prioritize giving booster shots. In light of this, individuals who have already received the complete course of immunization should receive a booster shot, and those who have already received one booster dose should receive a second. To contain the epidemic and lower hospitalization and mortality rates, both the government and the populace must act quickly. Otherwise, a sixth wave will unavoidably occur, destroying our flimsy healthcare system and having catastrophic effects on the economy. Because the majority of people won’t be able to survive another lockdown, we must prevent such a catastrophe.
