Christmas celebrations


Freedom of religion is guaranteed by the constitution of Pakistan, which established a fundamental right of Pakistani citizens, irrespective of their religion, to equal rights. Christians constitute of about 1.6% of Pakistan’s population and like other religions have full liberty to celebrate their religious rituals. Christmas, which is an important ritual of the Christian community, is celebrated with full fervor and the government provides all possible facilities to the community to celebrate Christmas. They are provided full security for their religious ceremonies and other communities also cooperate with them to celebrate the day in a befitting way. Christmas trees, fairy lights, Santa caps and snowmen dotted cities across Pakistan were seen at the occasion of Christmas on Wednesday. Members of the Christian community attended special services at illuminated churches where prayers were also offered for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan. Extending his heartiest greetings to Christian brethren on Christmas, President Dr Arif Alvi said that the government of Pakistan held sacrosanct, the equality and freedom of conscience of all citizens irrespective of belief, creed or religion. He said that much more than festivity and celebration, the spirit of Christmas was to share, to reach out and to love all humanity. The president commended the efforts of Pakistani Christian Community for the socio-economic development of the motherland. Prime Minister Imran Khan in his message on the occasion reiterated that the government treats all minority citizens as equal citizens of Pakistan and undertakes to empower them to use their abilities socially, economically and politically for the national development. The Prime Minister also extended his heartiest felicitations and wished Merry Christmas to the Christian brethren in Pakistan and all over the world. The founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had, right from the first day of creation of Pakistan, unequivocally declared a policy of equality, freedom and security for all communities living in Pakistan irrespective of their religion, profession or ethnic origin. The role of Christian community for the socio-economic development of the country in general and in the fields of health and education in particular is highly appreciable.
