Islamabad: President COPAIR Amna Munawwar Awan and Tazeen Akhtar of Pakistan in the World on 21st May 2022, organized a solidarity event to express condolence and pay tribute to late journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and highlighted human rights violations in Palestine. Ambassador of Palestine H.E Ahmed Jawad A.A. Rabaei with Counselor/ Deputy Head of Mission Nader K. Alturk, Dr. Sadia Kamaal Vice President of National Press Club, Muhammad Afzal Butt from Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, Abdul Rehman and the team from Aljazeera and other dignitaries from journalist community graced the solidarity event with their presence and special remarks. On Wednesday 11 May 2022, Israeli forces shot Palestinian and Al Jazeera Channels’ Journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, while covering a raid on the Jenin Refugee Camp in the West Bank.

Speaking at the occasion, President COPAIR- Amna Munwwar Awan welcomed the Excellences, and dignitaries for attending the solidarity event. She paid rich tribute to the Iron lady of Palestine late journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh. She praised her career as a journalist and her brave media coverage. The whole journalist community is grieving over the demise of Shireen as she was a role model for the women journalists of the entire world, she added. In her life and her death, she was a force that united the Palestinian cause. It never was, nor will be, important whether she was Muslim or Christian, as all religious communities either Muslims or Christians participated at her funeral. She concluded by saying that we the people of Pakistan are feeling the pain and grieving for our Palestinian Muslim brothers and sisters and always stand with them for the cause of human rights violations in Palestine.

Mr. Tazeen Akhtar- Editor of Pakistan in the World said Shireen Abu Akleh is the latest Palestinian journalist to be killed by the Israeli occupation forces,” latest” because murdering Palestinian journalists is nothing new for the Zionist military of Israel. Israeli forces undeniably target Palestinian journalists, yet they are denying it. Shireen Abu Akleh was the type to treat journalism as a public service. In fact, I’m willing to say that all Palestinian journalists who risk their lives to platform the Palestinian liberation struggle are the type to treat journalism as a public service. Being related to the profession of journalism, I am sick of seeing Palestinian journalists killed for their selfless reporting and we strongly condemn this brutal act and call for solidarity of the entire Muslim Ummah.

Dr. Sadia Kamal highlighted the background of the event that this was not a new thing for Shireen, as she was arrested in 2012 by the occupational forces. I will never stop demanding that anyone who wants to call themself a journalist show solidarity with Palestinian journalists. Most people who work in newsrooms have an even greater obligation to show solidarity with Palestinian journalists. For giving a platform to Palestinians, Shireen deserves to be memorialized. She deserved to have a proper murder investigation against the pitiless forces of Israel. The whole world community and the international organizations must take a step against this ruthless act. She also praised the initiative of President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas, who highlighted this issue at the international level. Being a Journalist I feel grieved over the murder of my fellow Palestinian sister, who was performing her sacred duties at Refugee Camp, she concluded.

Mr. Afzal Butt while talking at the event said, we always stand with our Palestinian brothers and sisters for the cause of their freedom. Palestine is not a cause of the Palestinian people but the whole Muslim Ummah. We are paying rich tribute to Shireen Abu Aqleh, her divine duties and her courage as a role model for the entire journalist community.

Mr. Abdul Rehman from Al Jazeerah Channel paid tribute to her fellow Journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh. He said she went there to cover the news and she became the news.

H.E Ahmed Jawad A.A. Rabaei praised the efforts of COPAIR and President of COPAIR Ms. Amna Munawwar Awan and Mr. Tazeen Akhtar- Editor of Pakistan in the World for organizing this solidarity event. Pakistan is a second home to me and the relationship between both countries is decades-old even before the creation of Pakistan, His Excellency added. He stated that he truly believes the act of journalism can play an important role in bringing about change for humanity when those who pursue journalism treat their profession as a public service as the Shireen Abu Aqleh was doing for the last two decades. I am feeling thankful to the organizers who always stand for the cause of Palestine at all levels, His Excellency added.
