International Women’s Day in retrospect of societal evolution

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality. In retrospect, the mid-eighteen century marked a key phase of women’s role in societal evolution. Since that juncture of the epoch, a shift began to unfold. Women steadily began to take on their roles confidently from every direction. The contribution of women was ignored and unappreciated for far too long. However, they have been in the scene since the beginning of time. Glancing back to ancient times, women have been engaged in accumulating agricultural resources to provide for their families, making cloths for shelter and fishing nets, the care of animals to be able to process milk, meat, and wool contributing to their households. They have been further engrossed in pottery, making utensils to eat in. Along with sheltering their homes, they were also engaged in weaving and sewing clothes. All these today, in the modern era, are considered potential businesses. It was considered that the women improved the families. However, along with cultural constraints, the roles of the women were confined to their homes. With the stride of time, women were bestowed with roles beyond the household. Moving a little further in the timeline, the progressive Persian Empire was the first Empire where men and women were seen as nearly equal. They could participate in the military, possess properties, take part in businesses, and could even be enthroned as rulers. Further to this, women began to contribute to war as well, practicing and attaining war-like skills.
Pre-eminently, the age of industrialization brought with itself a changing effect on the lives of women as the migration from rural to urban areas took place. With the foundation of industries, the women who migrated along with their men began contributing to the household by engaging in jobs outside their homes. They entered the workforce which pronounced double role for them – contributing both, inside and outside of their households. However, their wages were less than that of men. Some would even engage in dangerous and weightlifting jobs such as coal mining and factories and yet were not compensated even the half as men. This led to protests and recognition.
Today, in the modern era, women are valued as contributing to their households, societies, and governments. They are rather notably contributing towards development. Women are caretakers, educators, employees, doctors, engineers, politicians, and artists. They are an integral part of implementing social changes. The endowment towards the economy is palpable and undeniable. A huge class of women is entrepreneurs ranging from clothes to interior designing, from writers and researchers to art, and so forth. Their roles have changed from bread bakers to bread earners. Women have become world leaders from leading thrones to winning elections as presidents. The strategic life choices have encompassed gains on both ends, for the women and the society.
The notion of belief took millennials for women to realize the influence they have on the household and society. Collectivism was a great approach that had built consciousness and confidence to act upon the necessities of recognition. The norms and rules that were set for women were shattered by women into them shaping those norms and rules extending from private to their public lives, from local organizations to international ones to governments. It is pertinent to mention that women have become a significant actor in Decision-making processes at the state level. Hefty contributions are provided by the women of the health sector as psychologists, gynecologists, physicians, and nurses. The multi-dimensional contribution of women has helped in transferring ideologies and the change of power allocation game occupying prominent positions in media and politics. This has led to an overall contribution to development. Another field that women are seen progressing in is sports.
From housewives to CEOs, women have come a long tiring way. With the advent of technology, women who stay home due to various family reasons have the will and power to be entrepreneurs using cellulose devices and quiet, successfully. They have proven to be socially, politically, and economically renowned and established.
It has taken movements and actions of centuries for women to reach here. Women always had the power within them, it was time they realized their worth and agency. There is no doubt that women linchpins the contemporary world’s prospects of development and progress.
